Treatments for Obesity: The Main Thing is to Get Started

Traditional treatments for obesity include diet and exercise, drug therapy, behavior therapy, and surgery. Dieting is the best short term answer to weight loss. To keep the weight off, an overweight person will need to make lifestyle changes.Obesity is determined by the amount of body fat a person has on their body. The Body Mass Index is a measure body fat. To determine the BMI a person's weight in kilograms is divided by their height and squared. To make the process easier the National Health Institute and many other institutions produce BMI charts that are easy to read and give the necessary information at a glance. The dangers of obesity are extreme and life threatening. Excess weight can cause stress on weight bearing joints which results in severe pain. It can cause hypertension and is a contributing factor to heart attacks. Diabetes is frequently seen in obese individuals.
Do Obesity Treatments Ever Fail? One of the main reasons treatments for obesity fail is that they never start. An estimated 78 percent of obese patients feel that it is too late for any weight loss program to make a difference in their life. Even with medical attention, this attitude is difficult to change. Doctors are beginning to recognize the causes of obesity and the many facets that emotions play in weight gain and obesity. Stress eating and eating caused by depression are not new. However, the effect of stress on children, leading to obesity, is helping doctors understand this new health crisis.
Just Eating Less?Every obese person has been told to eat less. Unfortunately, it's not so simple. However these weight loss supplements have helped with reducing the appetite. A healthy weight loss plan must be designed with the patient's overall health in mind. A nutritionist can determine if the obese person will benefit from a diet that is low in fat, low in carbs, or low in calories. A diet must become part of a lifestyle change, for treatments for obesity. Exercise is a priority. The American Heart Association recommends a person participate in a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate exercise 5 times a week. A very obese person may not be able to complete the recommended weekly exercise. Instead, it can be a goal. 5 days of exercise are still imperative, the time limit can start at a lower increment and work up to 30 minutes. Eventually, the person will be comfortably exercising well beyond the allotted time.
Surgery?Weight loss surgery, bariatric surgery, is an extreme measure of weight intervention. It's not right for all overweight patients. Doctors will recommend weight loss surgery for patients with a BMI of 40.0 or above, in the morbidly obese category. Treatments for obesity are available for anyone with a BMI over 30.0. A person who is in the obese weight category should work with their doctor to develop a diet and exercise program for their individual needs.
